Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, together with zebras and gazelles, move across the Serengeti in a continuous search for fresh grass and water. This movement, known as the Great Wildebeest Migration, is the most famous wildlife event in Tanzania and one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world.
The migration follows the rain, which means the herds change location throughout the year. Knowing where they are at a certain time helps you plan the perfect safari.

December to March – Southern Serengeti & Ndutu (Calving Season)
This is when thousands of calves are born on the short grass plains. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs are very active during this time.
Best for: Predator action, photography, first-time safari visitors, and fewer crowds than river season.
April to May – Central Serengeti (Green Season)
The rains make the park lush and beautiful. The herds start moving north and spread across the plains.
Best for: Green scenery, quiet game drives, and better safari prices.
June to Early July – Western Serengeti (Grumeti River)
The animals gather near the Grumeti River for one of the first river challenges. Crocodiles wait as the herds prepare to cross.
Best for: River crossing moments without peak-season crowds.
Late July to October – Northern Serengeti (Mara River Crossings)
This is the most dramatic time. Huge herds gather at the Mara River and attempt dangerous crossings while predators wait nearby.
Best for: The famous river crossings and intense wildlife drama.
November – Moving Back South
With the short rains, the herds begin their journey back to the southern plains to start the cycle again.
Best for: Fewer vehicles and good wildlife viewing during movement.
